What are CVD Diamond?
Chemical Vapour Deposition or more familiar CVD is the term associated with synthesized or Lab Grown Diamonds that are cultivated or manufactured in labs using intricate technological processes. While the process is Chemical Vapour Deposition, the diamonds manufactured through this procedure are known as CVD diamonds. CVD diamonds are indistinguishable to natural diamonds because of their much similar physical properties and chemical composition.
What led to the emergence of CVD?
Natural diamonds derived from the earth’s mantle are formed while undergoing complex geological processes that span to a billion years, making natural or mined diamonds extremely expensive and unreasonable to ordinary people. Thus, the need for man-made diamonds emerged that are relatively inexpensive and are as well capable of providing identical quality, premium look, and magnificent features.
This led to the invention and introduction of the High Pressure High Temperature – HPHT method that enabled humans to synthesize diamonds in laboratories. HPHT diamond created the same way natural diamond crystal formed: high levels of pressure and high grades of temperature. History of CVD diamonds.
The first Lab made diamond, which was produced by General Electric in 1956, was the HPHT diamond. But in 1954, precisely before the HPHT diamonds announcement, a patent was present for another growing method of the diamond, which was CVD. But because of some doubt in the CVD diamond report, it was not launched for many years.
In the 1980s, with the advanced high technique and intelligence, scientists discovered the right method of growing gem quality lab diamonds through the CVD method.

However, CVD diamonds are not created the exact way a natural diamond is formed. It produced diamonds from a heated mixture of gases at low pressures. In ordinary situations, a combination of heated gases at low-pressure form graphite or other rock minerals. But in the CVD growth chamber, this process result in formation of beautiful gem quality CVD diamond.
How are they made?
For CVD growing process, this process is relatively slow compared to other laboratory diamond growing processes, as the molecules move at a speed of around 0.1-10 microns attaching itself and form a diamond film in almost an hour. In CVD of diamond,
A fragile “seed” is placed in a sealed chamber. The seed is often composed of deposit materials of carbon, fluorocarbons, silicon, filaments, etc.
The seed is then subjected to high temperatures estimated around 800 degree Celsius.
A carbon-rich gas, usually a combination of hydrogen and methane gases, is introduced inside the chamber. Here the carbon particles get ionized and undergo a molecular breakdown, and only the pure carbon particles settle on the diamond seed.
